Downtown Houston Condos, Lofts, High-rises, and Unique Condominiums

People from all walks of life are migrating to the urban lofts and condos in Downtown Houston.

Take Barbara Friedman. She lives in the Hermann Lofts and was the first person to buy a loft in the new wave of development in the early ‘90s. (She says her mother comes in and still wants to know when they are going to put the walls and ceilings in.)

Her desire to moved to Downtown Houston started when she was a little girl. Her father used to bring cotton into the city to the Cotton Exchange building and going with him into town was the most exciting thing for her. The Hermann Building, where she lives now, was built for the spillover business from the Cotton Exchange. The dealers would come into her building to show the cotton when it was too full next door.

Barbara moved out of a big house on North Boulevard where she  spent time and energy getting in her car. Now it’s totally different  – she goes to the doctor’s office on the train, to the museum on the train, and she go to eat downtown.

Or take David Greiss. He always wanted to live in New York. One day his sister gave him tickets to the symphony and in the program was an ad for Commerce Towers. They went to look at them the next day and wound up buying there. As David says, “Living in Downtown Houston gives me the best of both worlds. I have the energy and ambiance of living in a big city at a much lower cost than New York. But those were the most expensive free tickets to the symphony I ever got!”
